6月16日、郁文館グローバル高校では、在日米国大使館 上級国防代表兼国防駐在官（Senior Defense Official / Defense Attaché）を務めるダニエル・E・フィリオン海軍大佐をお迎えし、特別講演会および生徒とのパネルディスカッションを開催しました。

本イベントは、アメリカ建国250周年という歴史的な節目を迎える中、生徒たちが日米関係の歴史や日米同盟の意義について理解を深めるとともに、インド太平洋地域を取り巻く国際情勢、安全保障、リーダーシップについて多角的な視点から学ぶことを目的として実施されました。当日は、郁文館グローバル高校および郁文館中学校グローバルクラスから約190名の生徒が参加しました。

日米関係の歴史から未来へ

第1部では、「The History of Japan–U.S. Relations and the Current State of the Japan–U.S. Alliance」をテーマに、フィリオン海軍大佐が講演を行いました。

1853年のペリー来航から始まる日米交流の歴史、第二次世界大戦後の復興と経済発展、桜の寄贈や安全保障協力、東日本大震災における「Operation Tomodachi」、さらには宇宙開発など、政治・経済・安全保障・人的交流の幅広い視点から、日米関係が築かれてきた歩みについて紹介されました。
また、「両国の関係を支えているのは民主主義や法の支配といった共通の価値観である」と語り、未来の日米関係を担う若い世代への期待が生徒たちへ伝えられました。

生徒が世界の第一線で活躍するリーダーと英語で対話

第2部では、「Leadership that Supports Global Peace and Stability: What Can We Do as the Next Generation?」をテーマに、郁文館グローバル高校の代表生徒によるパネルディスカッションを実施しました。

生徒たちは、自身の海外経験や探究活動、国際社会に対する問題意識、将来のビジョンについて英語で発表を行い、その内容をもとにフィリオン海軍大佐と意見を交わしました。
「民主主義国家同士の連携が平和維持に果たす役割」「若者が国際社会へ貢献するために必要なこと」「リーダーシップとは何か」といったテーマについて活発な議論が展開され、生徒たちは世界の第一線で活躍する外交・安全保障の専門家から直接フィードバックを受ける貴重な機会となりました。

フィリオン海軍大佐は、
「軍人は戦争を望んでいるわけではありません。平和を守ることこそ私たちの使命です。」
と語り、国際協力や対話の重要性、そして若い世代が異なる文化や価値観を理解し続けることの意義について、生徒たちへ力強いメッセージが送られました。

世界を舞台に学ぶ機会を日常に

最後の質疑応答では、多くの生徒が積極的に手を挙げ、安全保障、外交、国際協力、リーダーシップなどについて質問を投げかけました。

郁文館グローバル高校では、このように世界の第一線で活躍するリーダーを学校へ招き、生徒が英語で直接対話する機会を数多く設けています。
知識を学ぶだけでなく、自ら考え、世界の課題について議論し、多様な価値観に触れる経験を通して、生徒一人ひとりが「世界を舞台に活躍する力」を育んでいます。

On June 16, Ikubunkan Global High School had the honor of welcoming Captain Daniel E. Fillion, Senior Defense Official / Defense Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Japan, for a special lecture and panel discussion with students.

Held as the United States celebrates the historic milestone of its 250th anniversary, the event aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the history of Japan–U.S. relations and the significance of the Japan–U.S. Alliance, while encouraging them to explore international affairs, regional security in the Indo-Pacific, and leadership from multiple perspectives. Approximately 190 students from Ikubunkan Global High School and the Global Class of Ikubunkan Junior High School participated in the event.

Looking Back at the History of Japan–U.S. Relations—and Looking Ahead

In the first session, Captain Fillion delivered a lecture titled “The History of Japan–U.S. Relations and the Current State of the Japan–U.S. Alliance.”

He traced the development of bilateral relations from Commodore Perry’s arrival in Japan in 1853 to post-war reconstruction and economic cooperation, highlighting milestones such as Japan’s gift of cherry blossom trees to Washington, D.C., security cooperation between the two countries, Operation Tomodachi following the Great East Japan Earthquake, and ongoing collaboration in space exploration. Through these examples, students gained a broader understanding of the political, economic, security, and people-to-people ties that have shaped the partnership between Japan and the United States.

Captain Fillion also emphasized that the relationship between the two nations is built upon shared values such as democracy and the rule of law, leaving students with an inspiring message about the important role the next generation will play in strengthening the future of the alliance.

Students Engage in Dialogue with a Global Leader

The second session featured a panel discussion titled “Leadership that Supports Global Peace and Stability: What Can We Do as the Next Generation?” with student representatives from Ikubunkan Global High School.

The students shared presentations in English about their international experiences, inquiry-based learning, perspectives on global issues, and aspirations for the future. Their presentations led to an engaging dialogue with Captain Fillion on topics including the role of alliances between democratic nations in maintaining peace, how young people can contribute to the international community, and the qualities of effective leadership.

The discussion provided students with a unique opportunity to exchange ideas directly with a senior leader in diplomacy and security and to receive valuable insights from someone working on the front lines of international cooperation.

During the discussion, Captain Fillion shared a powerful message:
“Military personnel do not seek war. Our mission is to preserve peace.”

He encouraged students to value international cooperation and dialogue while continuing to deepen their understanding of different cultures and perspectives as future global leaders.

Bringing the World into the Classroom

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, during which many students eagerly asked questions about international security, diplomacy, global cooperation, and leadership.
